One of the biggest highlights from the 2007 Solar Decathlon comes from reigning victor University of Colorado- and the design is proving once again that the team has what it takes to be solar design champions. Committed to defending their 2002 and 2005 titles, the 2007 CU Solar Decathlon team has brought a versatile, modular design that integrates “shining” examples of solar technology, recycled shipping containers, and a super cool aesthetic.

Slaughter Productions Container Home Project

This concept house uses 3 20-ft shipping containters, a 10-ft container, and a 40-ft container. It is designed to fit on our hillside with a 2-car garage on the street, and a "granny" or accessory-style house below. The front-facing container houses the living room which opens to the deck with a garage-style door, increasing living space and opening up the room to the deck and outdoors.

An alternative version below using 5 20-ft shipping containers.

The shipping container is the standard for shipping goods from place to place. Built to exacting specifications to withstand tremendous loads, maintain low internal temperatures efficiently and be weather tight enough to float if dropped overboard, these vessels of commerce make excellent building blocks for architecture. Even after many trips around the globe when they are retired from commerce, they still easily meet or exceed the building codes for construction. And as a net importer, the US ports are filled with them.

This house incorporates three insulated containers into the design of this airy yet compact two bedroom house. Two forty foot containers are stacked on one side and a third is cut in half and stacked on the other creating protective walls for a two story atrium living room in the middle. Bedrooms in the upper containers are given added width with bay windows. A stair and a bridge through the atrium connect the two upper containers to the space below.

The house, currently under construction, is infilling an empty lot overlooking a regional park in the eastern hills above San Francisco Bay.

Your new home will be docking soon

Imagine if the top floor of your home had been to China, the west wing spent time in Dubai and the bathroom did a stint in Britain.

Sure, from the outside they look like shipping containers, but that's because they are.

Royal Wolf Trading yesterday revealed its latest prototype for temporary accommodation made from containers. Dubbed the Blue Room, the three-bedroom, two-storey house is made from four converted shipping containers held together with heavy chains.

Its interior features insulated walls, windows, plumbing and electricity, and has features real estate agents love to reel off — stainless steel appliances, floorboards, reverse-cycle air-conditioning and deluxe bathrooms.

Shipping containers have been used in the past as accommodation and office space, including as student accommodation in Amsterdam and in London's Trinity Buoy Wharf area.

Royal Wolf Trading general manager Bob Allan said the company had for the past 10 years been buying decade-old shipping containers for use in the homes.

It has come up with several variations on the live-in container, from an $11,000 six-metre unit with bed, kitchen and bathroom, right up to the $140,000 four-container Blue Room complex.

The Blue Room is aimed at artists wanting to set up temporarily but Royal Wolf, which has offices around Australia, is also targeting local councils, universities and the mining and construction industries.

Edmonton companies say stacked shipping containers cut down on construction, land costs

Two Edmonton companies are proposing to ease Alberta's affordable housing crisis with units made from cargo containers more commonly seen stacked on the back of flatcars or in shipping yards.

The steel containers, ranging from six to 16 metres long, can be converted into homes by installing insulation, flooring and utility hook-ups, said Ocean Trailer manager Dwayne Warawa.

"There are windows as you see so you're not totally shut in," said Warawa as he gave tour of a new 12-metre container that has been transformed into a six-person bunkhouse with two bathrooms.

"These are equipped with light sockets, with plug-ins, with telephone outlets, with a breaker panel."

The demonstration model, which boasts three bunk beds, a full-sized shower and curtains, has a price tag of $40,000. So far, the company has brought a dozen units into Edmonton with another hundred on order from China.

Warawa said he's negotiating with the City of Grande Prairie as well as several developers there to introduce 50 to 200 container homes to the booming northern Alberta city.

"It's a whole lot better than sleeping in a tent or sleeping on the street. It's very affordable," he said.

"There is no reason why there shouldn't be a few hundred of these around every city as an alternative to the high rents right now and escalating real estate prices."

Working out of a hanger at the Edmonton City Centre Airport, Dale Alton is planning an inexpensive, environmentally friendly prototype for the city's housing market through his company, A-Just Housing.

He believes container homes can be extremely affordable and easy to access. Millions of cargo containers that arrived from China full of goods are sitting empty on docks across North America because manufacturers here don't ship as much material back to Asia.

The ability to stack up the containers on top of each other is another selling point as the cost of land goes up in Alberta.

Alton estimates each container home could cost as little as $35,000.
Student dorm, apartments built out of containers

"We can provide anything from a 300- to a 900-square-foot accommodation or living unit," he said.

"These will have everything from very basic things where single moms may just have very little and they need to build their nest and put things into it and grow their capital to places where people have 42-inch plasma TVs and automatic drapes opening."

Alton said container living is thriving around the world, including Amsterdam, where about 1,000 12-metre containers were stacked together to create a student dorm and London, England, where an apartment complex was built with containers on a wharf in 2001.

Currently, Ocean Trailer's containers are being purchased by people as cabins for their lakeside lots, and oil companies for workers' camps. The office versions have been used as shelter for security guards or as extra office space in warehouses.

Alton of A-Just Housing said he wants container homes to not only create much-needed low-cost housing in Alberta, but to also challenge people's creativity.

"We're going to make them cool," said Alton.
